  • Where can I purchase Toshiba SSD(s), SSHD(s), and/or HDD(s)?

    In Japan, Toshiba's bare drives such as SSDs, SSHDs, and HDDs are basically sold to OEM customers (PC manufacturers, system integrators and add-on makers), or to distributors, and not directly to end users. Customers of OEM and Distributors in Japan may be able to consult us by "Inquiry Form".

  • I would like to buy a case or a cable for my bare SSD, SSHD, and/or HDD.

    Toshiba does not sell a case or a cable for bare SSD, SSHD, and/or HDD separately.

Warranty (RMA)

  • What is the warranty on Toshiba's SSDs, SSHDs, and/or HDDs?

    Please see the "Warranty Support" page for product warranty information. For warranty service, the drive basically should be returned to the dealer from which it was purchased or device manufacturer of the device in which the drive was installed.

  • My drive is defective. How can I have it repaired?

    In many cases, the drive itself is not actually defective, but the problem may arise from the media used, incorrectly installed drivers or software, or a faulty operating system. Please remember these as possible sources of error before going through the effort of replacing the drive. This section of FAQs includes several methods for remedying the problem. If this doesn't help, please refer to the page of "Warranty Support".

    If the drive is actually defective, you have to distinguish between the following possibilities:

    If the drive was installed in another device (e.g. PC, laptop, external housing, server, etc.) when purchased, then it can only be repaired by the device manufacturer. Please contact the device manufacturer for information on its repair procedure.

    If you bought the device separately from a shop, then claims can only be made with the shop that sold you the drive.

    Toshiba does NOT provide a direct repair service to anyone other than our direct customers. It is not possible to make claims directly to Toshiba in cases of possible defects. Therefore please do NOT send a defective drive to Toshiba, because Toshiba cannot process this type of transaction.

  • Will the data on my SSD, SSHD and/or HDD be available after repair? Does Toshiba provide data recovery?

    Toshiba Corporation Storage & Electronic Devices Solutions Company does not provide any data recovery service, and your data will not be available after repair.

    As for the repair process for Toshiba's SSD, SSHD, and/or HDD, please refer to the pages of "Warranty Support" and "FAQ". Where Toshiba handles the repair process for direct customers, Toshiba's policy is to fully respect the confidentiality of your data. Therefore all data on any of drives will be rendered inaccessible as a result of the repair process. This serves to prevent misuse any of the data stored on your drive.

    If you are in urgent need of the data on your defective drive, please contact specialized data recovery companies.

  • Will I receive the same drive in return?

    As for the repair process for Toshiba's SSD, SSHD, and/or HDD, please refer to the page of "FAQ". In principle, you will receive a different drive from the one you sent in for repair in order to speed up the exchange process and reduce your waiting time.

  • How can I distinguish a Toshiba drive from other vendor's products?

    There is "TOSHIBA" logo printed on the label of our drive.

  • I would like to know rule of naming (model number) of Toshiba's SSD, SSHD, and HDD.

    Please refer to the description about Toshiba's model number system in ”Technical Support” page.

  • Can you provide specifications for Toshiba SSD, SSHD, and HDD?

    Our current product specifications can be found on this web site. Many of older product specifications can be found on the page of "Product Archive".

    There are some products that are not included on the web pages linked above. They are the models that were shipped to limited customers, and/or the ones that are past their warranty expiration term.

  • I would like to receive a manual or any technical reference document for my drive.

    Toshiba provides the technical reference document to our direct customers, and not to end users. Direct customers should speak with their sales representative.

  • What are Solid State Drives (SSDs)?

    SSDs are based on the use of semiconductor NAND flash memory technology (a non-volatile storage technology that does not require power to retain data) and are available in the same form factor, interface style and capacity size as the traditional HDDs that are based on the use of rotating media platter.

  • What are the advantages of SSD over HDD?

    Because SSDs have no mechanical moving parts, the performance of the device is restricted only by the electrical characteristics and the time to access the addressed data. This in turn is governed by the design overheads of the device and its addressing/mapping algorithms to the NAND flash memory. In contrast, data access performance in HDDs is determined by the quickness of movement of electromechanical components to position a read/write head over a defined area on a rotating disk. In addition, with SSDs having no moving parts, this enhances the ruggedness and tolerance to external environmental forces such as vibration/shock.

  • Are SSDs a direct replacement technology for HDDs?

    There is a definite market opportunity for the performance and reliability advantages of SSDs. However, we expect SSDs to coexist with HDDs for the future because there is a role for both storage technologies depending on the application environment and expectation. SSDs are seen as HDDs but much faster, providing fantastic IOPS (Input/output Operations Per Second) performance in comparison. It effectively emulates HDDs in terms of its responses and provides the same or greater specification interface to the host bus adaptor (HBA). In terms of error reporting the construct of SSDs differs to that of HDDs, and certain features and error processing will become redundant. But where possible, compatible error codes are emulated to maintain alignment with existing software tooling and support services. Furthermore, certain commands favor the design of HDDs as opposed to SSDs, so either these commands are rejected where not applicable or an emulated response is provided to satisfy device drivers and management software to avoid unnecessary system error logging where OSs do not reflect support for current device types. Current interface data rates are 6 Gbit*/s for SATA products, and 12 Gbit/s (Max.) for SAS products.

    In the end, Toshiba sees HDDs and SSDs as critical storage solutions with long term viability and attributes specific to different applications.

  • How long will SSDs last in comparison to HDDs?

    HDD longevity is determined by the wear of the mechanical components and its ability to maintain the highly accurate control associated with intricate movement. This can also be directly linked with the operational environment HDDs are expected to perform within, and this influence can act as an accelerator to drive degradation over time. The actual field life of HDDs can easily surpass its warranty period if the drive is installed and used in accordance with the manufacturer's design specifications and is independent of the number of write/read operations. Conversely, SSD technology does place a restriction on the number of write/erase cycles applied to each memory cell as these degrade over time and use. SSD specification generally states a total data capacity that can be written to SSDs before they are worn out and the management of cell life and the re-assignment of data are core technologies to SSDs.

  • What are the strong points of Toshiba's SSDs?

    Toshiba can provide the trustworthy product based on NAND control technology amassed as an inventor and a manufacturer of flash memory, and matured storage know-how accumulated as an experienced HDD manufacturer.

  • What form factors and capacity size are available?

    Generally, the form factor (FF) of SSDs has been designed to duplicate or enhance those offered by 2.5-inch HDDs. This is for pure compatibility reasons where the design specification of PC, array or server chassis dictates certain z-height maximums (x=width, y=length). This also applies to indirect mounting using a tray or hot-swap drive carrier. In addition to the 2.5-inch FF, the models in smaller FF are now available. Currently, Toshiba's SSD model designs offer 15mm, 9.5mm and 7mm z-height in 2.5-inch FF options to maintain direct HDD interchangeability, or in smaller mSATA and M.2 FF which are suitable for the smaller system design.

  • Can I mix SSDs and HDDs as RAID elements?

    SSDs can be applied to the same design applications as those currently involving HDDs. Where SSDs are used as the replacement devices for existing HDD installations to achieve improved performance, care should be taken to ensure that no system bottlenecks are likely to impede the expected performance increase due to legacy specification restrictions. Mixing HDDs and SSDs as RAID elements is unlikely to achieve the positive technology performance enhancements associated with SSDs, as the RAID controller and drive command completion times will be driven by the slowest element. In this case, if the application involves striping data, the HDD element will be the controlling factor on overall performance.

  • How much does SSD cost to buy?

  • What are SLC NAND flash Memory (NAND), MLC NAND, and TLC NAND? And what are the benefits for each of them?

    Single Level Cell (SLC) NAND list performance and memory cell longevity as positive design features, whereas capacity range and price ($ per GB) are generally regarded as the negative gating factors.

    Multi-Level Cell (MLC) and Triple-Level Cell (TLC) NAND list capacity range and price ($ per GB) as the positive design features, whereas memory cell longevity and performance are generally regarded as negative gating factors.

  • What are the performance levels of MLC NAND flash memory (NAND) and/or TLC NAND as compared to SLC NAND?

    SLC NAND flash memory has the fastest transfer rate and lowest power consumption among these three types of NAND flash memory although MLC/TLC flash memories have the advantages to enable higher density than SLC NAND flash memory and provide more cost-effectiveness into SSD.

  • Where are Client SSDs and Enterprise SSDs commonly found in today's computing environments/applications?

    Client SSDs are mainly used in mobile computing devices such as tablets, laptops and camcorders. They also start to be introduced as read intensive SSDs in data center application.

    With the cost of Enterprise SSDs (eSSDs) still commanding a premium price, applications for this technology is growing but still niche in the number of applications which make the performance vs. cost and combining enterprise data reliability/integrity a prerequisite. In the enterprise sector, eSSDs form the pinnacle of performance storage and as such is regarded as Tier0 within the tiered storage system model. Extreme performance within transactional processing environments may drive the use of eSSDs as RAID elements, but this is still the exception rather than the norm. More commonly an eSSD device is used as a cache accelerator element fronting a storage array under the control of advanced file system and storage managers to provide uplift in overall HDDs based array storage performance.

  • Where can I buy Toshiba SSDs? What is the warranty system for Toshiba SSDs?

  • What is Toshiba's definition of "Hybrid Drive" or "SSHD (Solid State Hybrid Drive)"?

    Toshiba defines "Hybrid Drive" or "SSHD" as "HDD which is developed to integrate higher performance by mounting NAND flash memory as cache function".

  • How does Toshiba's SSHD operate? And what are its advantages?

    By using NAND flash memory (NAND) for cache function, SSHD may improve system responsiveness just in a single storage unit.

    Also it tracks which files, applications and data are requested by the host system user. Its self-learning algorithms analyze these usage patterns to determine the access frequency to each the data. While all data is written to the disk for long-term storage, frequently accessed data is placed in the NAND for fast response to expected near-future accesses.

    In addition to enhanced performance and responsiveness, SSHD also draws upon the cost-efficiencies associated with conventional HDDs. The SSHD technology combines the best attributes of NAND and HDDs, to provide dramatically increased data processing speeds, high storage capacity and low cost.

  • Does Toshiba’s SSHD require me to do anything for the drive to operate?

    Nothing special is needed to realize the performance and responsiveness benefits of SSHD. The Toshiba SSHD is a fully integrated solution, designed with sophisticated self-learning caching algorithms that learn the user’s data access patterns to maximize performance. It can be recognized and identified as "single" storage unit by the operating system, and no device driver or utility is required to prepare or install.

  • How much does it cost, comparing to HDD or SSD?

  • What is the biggest factor/reason to increase write and read speed against conventional HDD?

    Toshiba's SSHD (Solid State Hybrid Drive) utilizes self-learning type of cache algorithm by implementing 8GiB* NAND flash memory.

    *: A gibibyte (GiB) as 230 bytes.

  • What kind of data is designed to be saved in each data storage tiers within Toshiba SSHD?

    Toshiba's SSHD (Solid State Hybrid Drive) includes DRAM, NAND flash memory (NAND) and rotating disk as tiered storage elements. The DRAM is used as front-end cache to system host for saving write/read data tentatively, but finally all data is stored onto rotating disk media. The next tiered NAND retains high frequently used data upon self-learning cache algorithm, and of course, finally all data is stored onto rotating disk media.

  • How long will NAND flash memory retain the cached data?

    The duration of cached data depends upon how frequently it is used. High frequency makes its data retain longer into NAND flash memory upon self-learning caching algorithm

  • Will all data be saved in NAND flash memory?

    No, not every piece of data is cached in NAND flash memory. It depends upon frequency how often the data are used.

  • Can I select specific software or application program to save data into NAND flash memory?

    No, Toshiba's SSHD (Solid State Hybrid Drive) determines which data are for caching into NAND flash memory by self-learning algorithm.

  • What will SSHD (Solid State Hybrid Drive)'s performance be like if data is read from rotating disk media?

    In case if data are stored on rotating disk media, not in NAND flash memory, reading operation shows the same throughput or performance as conventional HDD.

  • What kind of NAND flash memory is used on Toshiba's SSHD (Solid State Hybrid Drive)? What is the reason to use it?

    The NAND flash memory (NAND) utilized is 8GiB*, and type of NAND is SLC or MLC NAND per model. Toshiba develops and produces its own NAND, designs its SSHD to achieve NAND performance appropriately and considers specification, performance and essential cost in determining the suitable storage unit.

  • Are there any unique commands that the Toshiba SSHD supports?

    Toshiba does not utilize any specific commands to operate or provide the performance and application responsiveness we have defined for the Toshiba SSHD. Because the Toshiba SSHD manages all the NAND flash and self-learning operations, and appears to the user as a single device, the drive interacts with the host in the same manner as conventional HDDs.

  • Where is Toshiba SSHD available for purchase?

  • I need a formatting tool of HDDs.

    Toshiba does not provide a formatting tool for HDDs for personal users.

  • I need an HDD driver.

    Toshiba does not provide HDD driver for personal users. Toshiba HDD installed in Windows® PC system operates with a driver in Microsoft® Windows®.

  • I would like to get the firmware for my HDD.

    Toshiba does not provide any firmware program for end users.

  • I need a diagnosis tool of HDDs.

    Toshiba does not provide any diagnosis tool for HDD for personal users.

  • My system does not recognize the HDD which is designed for built-in use. Please tell me which HDDs are to be recognized.

    Toshiba's client HDD is aimed to be installed in systems made by our OEM customers. Toshiba has neither the information about HDD's compatibility nor about how the OEM's system would recognize an HDD. Therefore, please check with the manufacturer of your system about HDD's compatibility.

  • I would like to replace HDD installed in PC. What kind of Toshiba HDD can be installed to my PC as a replacement?

    Toshiba HDDs are shipped to OEM customers as storage devices installed in OEM PC systems. Please ask the PC manufacturer what kind of HDD will operate properly in the system. Consulting the PC manufacturer is recommended.

    In addition to the physical dimensions and connectors, there are a lot of parameters (like power consumption, temperature distribution, etc.) that could differ. Also, older BIOS versions may have difficulties recognizing modern HDDs which exceed a certain storage capacity. So please contact your PC manufacturer or certified dealer for information on which HDDs can be used in your PC.

  • My PC is not able to recognize all the available capacity of the upgraded HDD.

    Some old BIOS are unable to recognize the full capacity of a new larger HDD and it can only address a part of the drive. You are probably using a 32-Bit host PC. Systems with an LBA length of 32 Bit only support storage capacities up to 2.2 TB. Toshiba recommend that you contact your PC manufacturer and get new BIOS that support your larger HDD. Please refer to the information on the document linked here (50kB).

    If this is not the reason but the usable size is just a bit smaller than expected, this issue is probably due to different ways of calculating the size, either using the decimal or a binary system:

    In a decimal system 1GB=1,000MB=1,000,000KB=1,000,000,000Byte. But most operating systems calculate with factor 1024 instead of 1000: 1GB=1024MB=1024x1024KB= 1,073,741,824Byte. Because of this, all drives seem to be reduced about 7 percents smaller under the operating system than they really are.

  • I would like to know about 1.8-inch HDD connectors.

    Parallel ATA models of series number 08 or larger have all LIF connector.

  • I would like to know about Advanced Format. Do I need to partition my Toshiba advanced format hard drive?

    Under certain circumstances it would be effective to partition your drive for optimal performance. Please see "Advanced Format".

  • I would like to know 2.5-inch HDD Master/Slave configuration. Please tell me the jumper setting information for my HDD.

    For repair, trouble-shooting or answers to questions on your products, please contact the PC manufacturer if the drive is built in PC, or the add-on kit maker if you purchased it as an add-on kit.

    Master / Slave configuration is for PATA interface models, not for the ones with SATA interface. If you are using a single drive configuration, set jumpers to Master. If you are using a two drive configuration, you can set the drive as either the Master or Slave, depending on what the other drive is set at. In most situations, Toshiba's HDDs are shipped with no jumper present, making them master drives.
    The setup differs by models. Please refer to the following.

    Note: Toshiba sells our 2.5-inch HDDs only to OEM customers. There are some models which have different configuration at the request of OEM customers.

  • What are specialty HDDs?

    Specialty HDDs are HDDs optimized for use in a broad range of commercial/industrial applications. Each of specialty HDDs has specific capabilities, for example, “24x7 operation (for the applications which operates continuously long time)”, “extreme environment (temperature, vibration, and/or altitude)”, and “video streaming”.

  • Does the description of interface as "Serial-ATA 2.6" that is found in some models' specification information mean SATA-I or SATA-II?

    Serial-ATA 2.6 is the standard of Serial-ATA defined by SATA-IO organization. "SATA-I" and "SATA-II" is not the formal name but the popular collective term to cover standards of Serial-ATA 1.2 (the revision which supports 3.0Gbit/s transfer speed) and the later version. It usually means the interface whose transfer speed is 3.0Gbit/s. In this context, "SATA 2.6" can be regarded as one of "SATA-II".

  • My hard disk drive produces strange noises.

    In most cases, rattling noises are normal and are no reason to worry. They are caused by mechanical parts of the HDD and just indicate that the drive is reading, writing or calibrating itself. Even if the drive is not being actively written to or read from, most operating systems do a lot of accesses to the system disk in the background. So if there is no additional indication for a defect, just the noise alone basically does not indicate that the drive is faulty. And Toshiba might recommend you to consult PC/system vendors or the shop you purchased the device/system about the phenomenon since the HDD is just a part of the system.


  • I would like to request a parameter sheet for exporting Toshiba drive from Japan to another country.

    Please ask for it from your dealer from which the drive was purchased or the device manufacturer who installed the drive.

    For OEM customers and Toshiba authorized dealers, please ask your Toshiba sales representative.

  • Will Toshiba support the HDD that was made by HGST or Western Digital (WD) company in May 2012 or before?

    Toshiba does not provide support service for HGST/WD 3.5-inch HDDs made on or before May 15, 2012. Please contact WD for further information.

  • Does Toshiba support Fujitsu HDDs, which are designed for built-in use?

    Toshiba supports Fujitsu HDDs that are within warranty period and designed for built-in use through the manufacturer of your system in which your HDD is installed.
